Locally, I have a great area to walk or to hike with a pack on. An eight mile round trip to the top of Box Springs mountain was a great workout. Fourteen milers also built my confidence.
Trips abroad also provided opportunities to log some miles.
London: This a great town! My favorite. Right outside my hotel is Hyde Park. One lap around is about 5 miles. Late evening or early morning walks were the best. If you stay out of the pubs it is possible to find lean protein and great fresh fruit from all over Europe. Rotisserie chicken, salad and grapes were my favorite. Photos below are of Royal Albert Hall. A cultural gem. One thing these plucky Brits taught me is that rain is no big deal. Just get out there and carry on.
Tokyo: Interesting but very different. Affordable and accessible food is a bit more difficult. A walk around the Imperial Palace is a favorite in town and draws a steady stream of walkers, runners and bikers. A double lap was worth about 8 miles. One thing that doesn't show through the photos are the 8 lanes of city traffic right behind the cameraman. Go early before the city wakes up.
