Day 2. July 31: Merced Lake to Vogelsang High Sierra Camp. 8.3 miles

The triangle shaped chow bell rang at 7am and the camp slowly came to life.  After a big breakfast of pancakes and oatmeal, campers started heading to the trail of their choice. I started the steep climb up Fletcher creek towards Volgelsang High Sierra Camp.

Fletcher Creek Climb
I made a side trip to Emeric Lake and caught a few brookies. No Goldens that Mike had spoken of.

Vogelsang Camp was a tidy outpost above the tree-line and had a stunning backdrop of Yosemite granite. You could rinse your clothes in the stream but no showers or laundry here. The tent cabins were in great shape and had wood burning stoves.

Meal time at these camps is really a defining  part of your stay.  You meet really nice people from all over and get to hear of their different experiences. My roommates from the Bay Area and Massachusetts were both lugging camera gear.   The couple from Birmingham AL.,  the "mathematician" from San Jose State,  and Bob from Juneau who drove a BMW throughout Iran and Afghanistan in 1978.  Bob was proud that we all enjoyed Alaska salmon that night.
